Memorizing is so powerful. It is one way that we can meditate on God’s law, day and night (Psalm 1:2). There are many ways that people go about it: for some, using an app on their phone helps, others will use mental pictures. For me, simple repetition works the best.
Here are a few tips and tricks that may help you in your journey:
Be consistent. Try to find a couple of times each day to reinforce what you’re learning. For example, if you learn a verse in the morning, reviewing it again in the afternoon or evening can significantly help the process.
Start small. Don’t try to accomplish too much at a time. Often, the best way to approach a passage is to limit yourself to one verse a day. Learn it well, and revisit it throughout the day.
Review, review (and then review some more!). It’s easy to forget a verse just hours after learning it. Regular review helps your brain retain the words and, more importantly, the truth God wants you to know. Personally, I speak each verse out loud every day for 40 days. It usually takes about a week before I feel confident with it. Even after the 40 days, I continue reviewing the passage several times a week.
Give yourself grace. Our brains are good at leaking information…don’t get discouraged and keep at it! Keep going. Persistence is key, and every effort brings you closer to hiding God’s Word in your heart.
Consider an app. Technology can be a great aid in memorizing Scripture. If you’re someone who benefits from structure, reminders, or interactive tools, a Bible memory app might be just what you need. (Check out the links below for a few options!)
